Tracking dangerously cold wind chills overnight
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy and breezy. Lows in the single digits. Wind chills between -5 and -10.
TOMORROW: Mostly cloudy and breezy. Highs in the mid-teens with wind chills in the -5 to -10 degree range.
EXTENDED: Friday night into Saturday, a cold front will move into the Midwest, bringing a chance of snow showers early Saturday for areas mainly north of I-70. Any accumulation would be light in this area, likely up to a dusting. A half-inch will be possible north of Highway 24. As the front pushes through, temperatures drop into the single digits by late afternoon. Gusty winds from the northwest will bring wind chills down to about -10°. Overnight lows Saturday will fall a few degrees below zero..potentially getting close to record lows for Sunday AM. Wind chills on Sunday will be anywhere from 15 to 20 degrees below zero. The criteria for a wind chill advisory for the NWS STL office is -15 to -24, so that will likely be issued for much of the area Saturday night into Sunday.
After that our focus will turn to a potentially impactful storm late Sunday into early Tuesday. There has been more of a southerly shift to the track as of model data this morning/afternoon. Snow showers could move in from the west Sunday night, possibly bringing accumulating snowfall to the area on Monday, especially for areas south of I-70. It is too early to make a call on this potential storm as it has yet to be sampled, but be aware that there could be a Weather Alert Day for snowfall and an early start to the morning show on Monday/Tuesday depending on the outcome. I think we will have a better idea by late Friday/early Saturday. The rest of next week will be active with another system mid-week, but it finally looks like we are going to round the corner and get warmer by next weekend with temperatures finally reaching the 30s. Keep in mind this is still below normal as we typically average around 43 degrees.
