One taken to hospital after cars get stuck in Jefferson City floodwaters

KMIZ

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ) -

Cole County first responders took one person to the hospital on Monday night after a storm flooded roads across the city.

Jefferson City Fire Department assistant chief Jay Niemeyer told ABC 17 News that firefighters had to help people from three cars stuck in the water on Edgewood Drive and Creek Trail Drive around 9:30 p.m. Niemeyer said that Cole County EMS took one of the people rescued to the hospital for minor injuries. Firefighters helped people in two of the three cars make it to land from their cars, while the occupants of the third car swept into a ditch made it to land themselves.

Monday's storms brought rain, hail and a tornado to portions of mid-Missouri. The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team said two inches of rain fell in Jefferson City in Monday's storm. The storm knocked out power for hundreds of customers in Cole County, including Three Rivers Electric Cooperative and Ameren. The Jefferson City Fire Department also had to rescue a stranded boater earlier in the day from the Missouri River as the storm approached.

The city also saw several roads flood across the northwest part of the city earlier that night, affecting low-lying areas, Niemeyer said. Several neighborhoods had roads covered in water, which Niemeyer said receded in an hour or less.

Niemeyer warned drivers of the potential of further flooding should Jefferson City see more rain. He said Monday's storm has already filled the city's creeks and waterways, and more of it could cause the same flooding problems. He encouraged drivers to not drive through water totally covering a road.
