Storms cut power to thousands in Mid-Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

During early Thursday morning storms, several utility companies reported outages across Mid-Missouri.

In Columbia, a light pole fell down onto a sidewalk in downtown Columbia in the area of 4th Street and East Broadway.

Columbia Water and Light crews were seen in the area assessing the damage to the light pole to see how long work will take until it is back up and working again.

Ameren Missouri's outage map showed 1,409 customers without power in the Jefferson City area around 7:30 a.m. Power to most of them had been restored by about 10 a.m.

A spokesperson from Ameren Missouri told ABC 17 News the outages are weather-related. This comes after strong storms rolled through Mid-Missouri bringing strong damaging winds, lightning and heavy downpours.

Ameren crews were reported to be restoring power to customers after utility poles were down and broken. The spokesperson also said power was out for some because power lines were down.

Several counties including, Boone, Cole, Audrain and counties to the southwest were under a severe thunderstorm watch until 6 a.m.

Around 7:30 Thursday morning Boone Electric Cooperative's outage map showed 71 people were without power in Boone County.

The ABC 17 StormTrack Weather Team issued a Weather Alert day that remains in effect until midnight Thursday.

A second round of strong storms is expected late Thursday afternoon bringing the threat of hail, 60 mph winds and a potential for tornadoes.
