Troopers arrest driver involved in deadly Randolph County crash

Randolph County, Mo. (KMIZ)

Troopers arrested a driver involved in a deadly crash near Moberly on suspicion of two counts of second-degree murder, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

An arrest report shows troopers arrested Steven Garrett, 47, of Moberly on Thursday afternoon after the wreck on Route M.

Troopers said Garrett was driving westbound on Route M just east of Moberly just after 12:45 p.m. when he crossed into the eastbound lane. Garrett hit a car with two adults and a child head-on.

According to the crash report, a deputy coroner pronounced 22-year-old Maya Stilwell dead at the scene at 1:30 p.m. Troopers said she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The second murder charge is for Stilwell's unborn child. She was pregnant at the time of her death.

"There's two charges, and ones for the woman that was killed that was pregnant with the unborn child that was in the car, so that's where your two murder charges stem from," MSHP Cpl.l Justin Dunn said.

Dunn said the investigation is still in its early stages.

"There is forthcoming driving while intoxicated charges. There was signs of impairment so he was arrested for that," Dunn said.

After looking through online court records, Garrett has been convicted of DWI in 2005 and 2008.

Due to Garrett's previous convictions, he could face a felony DWI charge in this case. This could also make it possible for prosecutors to file murder charges because of that felony.

Randolph County ambulances took 23-year-old Conar Maylee and a 2-year-old to University Hospital in Columbia with moderate injuries.

According to the crash report, Maylee was wearing a seatbelt but it's unknown if the child was in a car seat.

Garrett was also hospitalized with moderate injuries and is listed to be in fair condition.

Maylee was released after being treated for his moderate injuries.

At last check, charges related to Thursday's crash have not been filed.
