Cardinals split doubleheader, clinch series win over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (KMIZ)

The Cardinals are knocking on the door of the top spot in the National League Central Division.

St. Louis (23-20) snapped its nine-game winning streak with a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia (25-17) in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader but bounced back to win the series with a 14-7 victory in the nightcap. The Redbirds sit just one game behind the Chicago Cubs for the division lead, following the team's latest series win.

After six straight scoreless frames, the Cardinals held the first lead of game one with an RBI single from Jordan Walker in the seventh inning. However, the Phillies responded with a pair of RBI singles in the home half of the same frame from Bryson Stott and Bryce Harper to earn a come-from-behind victory.

Erik Fedde was awarded a no-decision for his 5.2-inning start, giving up zero runs on just three hits with a trio of strikeouts. The veteran right-hander hasn't allowed an earned run in back-to-back appearances.

However, the team's 19-hit effort at the plate propelled St. Louis to victory in game two. After both franchises posted six runs in the first three innings of the contest, the Cardinals outscored the Phillies 8-1 in the final six frames, led by a 4-for-5 performance from Masyn Winn. The young shortstop hit his fifth home run of the season and tallied three RBI's and three runs scored.

Brendan Donovan, Ivan Herrera and Alec Burleson each recorded three-hit evenings at the dish. Burleson (3) and Lars Nootbaar (7) also hit home runs in the series finale.

Sonny Gray had a weak start on the mound, allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out four batters.

Up next - The Cardinals will travel across I-70 to renew their rivalry with the Kansas City Royals, starting on Friday night. First pitch of the three-game series is scheduled for May 16 at 6:40 p.m.
