Cardinals drop series finale to Brewers, fall short of three-game sweep

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Cardinals are still searching for their first series sweep since March 30.
St. Louis (12-16) lost game three of its series with Milwaukee (14-15), falling 7-1 at Busch Stadium. Despite Sunday's loss, the Cardinals did secure a series win, following back-to-back one-run victories over the Brewers in games one and two.
Milwaukee punished St. Louis starting pitcher Erick Fedde early-and-often, charging him with seven earned runs via six run-scoring singles. The Brewers started the game by producing a three-run opening frame, sparked by a string of RBI hits from William Contreras, Sal Frelick and Rhys Hoskins. Fedde went 5.2 innings on the mound and allowed seven runs on double-digit hits with four strikeouts.
After giving up seven unanswered runs, the Cardinals finally made a dent in their 7-0 deficit with an RBI double from Brendan Donovan in the home half of the fifth frame. However, Donovan's double marked the extent of their run-scoring hits, and Lars Nootbaar posted the team's only multi-hit performance, finishing the game 2-for-4 at the dish. Collectively, St. Louis did record seven hits but went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Up next - St. Louis is preparing to face the second of back-to-back divisional foes. The Cardinals travel to Cincinnati for a four-game series with the Reds, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 28 at 5:40 p.m.
