ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

After St. Louis evened the series with a shutout win over Philadelphia on Tuesday, the Cardinals fell short of clinching a series victory on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Busch Stadium. The Redbirds lost the series finale with the Phillies 4-3, despite a late comeback bid.

Wednesday's loss snapped a streak of two consecutive series wins for St. Louis and put them back below the .500-mark with a 6-7 overall record.

Philadelphia capitalized on a fielding error to score a pair of unearned runs in the opening frame, capped off by a two-out RBI single from Alec Bohm. However, the Cardinals responded with a pair of home runs from Ivan Herrera and Brendan Donovan in the second and third inning respectively to erase that 2-0 deficit.

The Phillies broke that 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with another two-run frame. Brandon Marsh and Nick Castellanos both posted RBI singles off Andre Pallante to give Philadelphia another two-run advantage.

Nolan Arenado and company started to rally late in the contest after the Cardinals' third baseman drove an RBI single back up the middle in the eighth inning. St. Louis got the tying run on first base to start the final frame, but Jeff Hoffman shut down the threat, forcing a fly out from Masyn Winn and a double play from Jordan Walker to end the game.

The Redbirds posted seven hits as a team, including a two-hit performance from Alec Burleson. Herrera's solo blast also put him in a tie for the team lead in home runs with three already this season.

Up next - St. Louis is heading west for a six-game road-trip, starting with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. First pitch for that three-game series is scheduled for April 12 at 8:40 p.m.
