SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KMIZ)

Despite losing Wednesday's series finale to the Padres 3-2, the St. Louis Cardinals ended their seven-game road trip with the team's first series win of the 2024 season. The Redbirds captured victories at Petco Park on Monday and Tuesday ahead of their home opener on Thursday.

In Wednesday's game, the Padres built a two-run lead in the first two frames after a bases loaded walk to Jurickson Profar and a fielder's choice from Fernando Tatis Jr. that allowed Jose Azocar to score. Nolan Arenado cut the Cardinals' deficit in half with an RBI single in the fourth inning, but Kyle Higashioka quickly put San Diego back in front by two runs with a solo home run in the bottom half of the frame. St. Louis scored another run on a fielder's choice from Paul Goldschmidt in the eighth inning but were unable to get the tying run across the plate.

Zack Thompson had a lackluster performance on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over five innings of work. The left-handed pitcher did post five strikeouts but ultimately was given the loss.

Up next - The Cardinals will welcome the Miami Marlins to Busch Stadium for their first home game of the season. St. Louis' home opener is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 4 at 3:15 p.m.
