Mizzou drops overtime thriller to Virginia, falls to 5-3 this season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker 87-81 to Virginia in overtime in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge on Thursday at John Paul Jones Arena. Robin Pingeton's crew now holds a 5-3 record this season and is still searching for its first true road win.

Mizzou built a lead as large as 15 points in the second quarter after a layup from Ashton Judd capped off an 18-2 Tiger run. However, Virginia battled all the way back, leading by as much as eight points in the final quarter.

In the final minutes of regulation, the Tigers were able to force overtime. Grace Slaughter hit a three-pointer with just 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter to make it a 73-72 Virginia lead. After the Cavaliers extended their lead to three points with just seven seconds left, Hayley Frank got fouled from three-point range, and she hit all three free throws to force overtime.

However, Virginia outscored Mizzou 12-6 in overtime to win the game on its home floor.

Frank was Mizzou's leading scorer with a team-high 21 points. She also added 7 rebounds.

Slaughter chipped in 17 points and made 66% of her shots in the contest, including some clutch shots in the final minutes of regulation.

As a team, Mizzou shot 45% from the floor but committed 18 turnovers.

Up next - the Tigers return to Mizzou Arena to host in-state rival SEMO. Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.
