Mizzou sweeps midweek doubleheader with Illinois

URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (KMIZ)

No. 11 Mizzou Softball has secured bragging rights. Larissa Anderson's crew won both games of its Braggin' Rights doubleheader with Illinois on Wednesday afternoon, improving its record to 22-3 ahead of a massive early season SEC series this weekend.

The Tigers won the first game of the doubleheader 5-4 behind some late-inning heroics. Mizzou was trailing by one run with two outs in the seventh frame when Alex Honnold blasted a two-run home run to give the Tigers the lead. Taylor Pannell proceeded to shut the door on Illinois in the bottom half of the frame to earn the save and seal the win.

Honnold and Jenna Laird both had three-hit performances and collected four of Mizzou's five RBI's in the game. In the circle, Laurin Krings allowed four runs on eight hits in less than five innings of work.

In game two of that Wednesday doubleheader, Mizzou's offense ran away with the lead quickly, leading to a 10-2 run-rule victory in five innings. Jefferson City alum Kara Daly got the scoring started with a three-run home run in the first inning. Then, the Tigers rallied in the fifth frame to score six runs on six hits.

Four different Tigers finished with two hits and at least two RBI's in the contest. Cierra Harrison pitched the full five innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Up next - Mizzou continues its six-game road trip with an important weekend series against No. 9 Tennessee. That three-game set begins on Friday, March 15 at 5 p.m.
