Mizzou surrenders late home run, falls short of first SEC win

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou Baseball has been swept by its first eight SEC opponents this season.

The Tigers (13-34) are still searching for their first conference victory of the 2025 campaign, following a 4-2 loss to No. 9 Georgia (39-11) in Sunday's series finale. MU's defeat extended its SEC losing streak to 24 consecutive contests.

After tying the game with a sacrifice fly from Pierre Seals in the eighth inning, Mizzou allowed a go-ahead two-run home run to Slate Alford in the final frame, which proved to be the game-deciding hit. From there, Georgia's Zach Harris protected the team's two-run lead, earning the save by pitching a scoreless inning and striking out two of the four batters he faced.

Blair Oaks graduate Wil Libbert matched his career-best with a seven-strikeout performance, giving up just two runs on six hits over five innings. Xavier Lovett and Ian Lohse were also effective out of the bullpen. Lovett allowed just one hit in two shutout frames, and Lohse tossed a one-hit, scoreless eighth inning. Collectively, the Tigers made the Bulldogs strand 11 baserunners.

MU was out-hit by UGA 9-5 in Sunday's game with Mateo Serna recording the team's only multi-hit effort. Seals, Jackson Lovich and Cayden Nicoletto also added one hit each.

Up next - Mizzou will strive to split its two-game season series with No. 25 Kansas on Tuesday, May 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Taylor Stadium.
