COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou football team found itself at No. 12 in the first College Football Playoff ranking of the year, on Tuesday. It is the highest CFP ranking in program history.

The last time the Tigers appeared in the CFP ranks it was week 14 of the 2020 season, at No. 25. It is the earliest that the program has appeared in the rankings, as well. Mizzou improved on its previous best ranking, which was No. 16 in the 2014 CFP poll.

Head coach Eli Drinkwitz and company will travel to meet CFP No. 2 Georgia on Saturday afternoon in Athens. The game will have big implications for MU, as a shot at the SEC East hangs in the balance.

The Tigers will head into that match up off of it's bye week, following a 34-12 win over South Carolina at Faurot Field in week eight. It is just the fifth time in program history that Mizzou has had a 7-1 start to the year. The last time it happened was in 2013 when MU went on to win their first-ever SEC East Division title.

Kickoff in Athens is at 2:30 p.m. CT.
