Gates starts Mizzou era with a home win against Southern Indiana

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Dennis Gates officially began his era at Mizzou Arena Monday night with a 97-91 win over Southern Indiana in front of the biggest crowd for an opener in five years with 10,723 fans.

The Tigers were led by one of the few returners from last years group, Kobe Brown, who reached a double-double before halftime. Brown finished 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Five other players got in double figures tonight.

Sean East had 12 points and five assists. Tre Gomillion had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. DeAndre Gholston and D'Moi Hodge both added 11 points and Nick Honor scored 10.

Freshman Aidan Shaw also had a nice collegiate debut shooting 4-of-5 with nine points in 12 minutes played.

Mizzou had six total dunks on the night with 46 points in the paint.

Up next - Mizzou will host Penn on Friday at 7 p.m. at Mizzou Arena.
