Ross resigning as Southern Boone’s head football coach, returning to Marceline

Southern Boone High School is in the market for its next head football coach.
A school spokesperson has confirmed to ABC 17 Sports that Mark Ross is resigning from his position at Southern Boone to return to Marceline High School as its head football coach for the 2025-26 school year. In a statement on social media, Marceline announced its board of education has approved Coach Ross for its open head coaching position, replacing Joseph Bryan Peterson.
"Southern Boone School District confirms that Mark Ross has submitted his resignation as head football coach at Southern Boone High School. We appreciate his leadership and dedication to the football program over the past three seasons and wish him nothing but the best as he and his family return to Marceline," Southern Boone Activities Director Trent Tracy said in a statement to ABC 17 Sports. "While we're saddened by Coach Ross's departure, we are eager to find the next individual with the right characteristics to lead our football program. The position has been posted, and we invite interested candidates to apply. We look forward to selecting a new coach who will continue our tradition of excellence in football."
In three seasons at Southern Boone (2022-24), Ross compiled a 19-14 overall record. Before that, he served as head coach at Marceline for four seasons (2018-2021), guiding the Tigers to a 42-7 overall record, three district titles and one state championship appearance.
Southern Boone has posted the head coaching position on its website as the search begins for its football program’s next leader.
