Tiger volleyball stuns No. 6 Tennessee at home

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

After its five game win streak was snapped by No. 7 Kentucky, Mizzou volleyball bounced back and toppled another top-10 foe in the Volunteers, 3-2.

Head coach Dawn Sullivan and company came out on a mission just two days after their last game. Mizzou jumped to a 10-4 lead, thanks to early points from eight different players. However, Tennessee showed its own strength, rallying from behind to steal the first set, 25-21.

That didn't effect the Tigers performance, as they managed to level the match 1-1 with their own 25-21 win. In the second set alone, fifth year Kimani Johnson notched eight kills on their way to that win. She would finish the game 16, tied for first on the team with Grace O'Reilly.

Sets three and four were just as contested, both needing to go to extra points to decide the winner. Tennessee pulled ahead 7-2 in set three, but Mizzou powered its way to tie the game at 13. Neither side would lead by more than two the rest of the way, until Tennessee took the frame 26-24.

The fourth was about as close as a game could get, with the largest lead of the set being just three points. Even with the close score, it was Mizzou's most productive set of the night, with the team earning 16 kills and six blocks.

Down to the final frame, Mizzou trailed just once in the fifth, when Tennessee took a 3-2 lead. Coach Sullivan's team then scored four unanswered to pull ahead, and never gave that lead back, stunning the sixth-ranked team in the country.

Up Next - Mizzou will host its penultimate home match of the year. No. 14 Texas will make the trip to Columbia, with the match slated to tip off on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
