Sunday Sit-down with KTGR’s Andy Humphrey

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

ABC 17 Sports Director Nathalie Jones brought on Andy Humphrey, co-host of KTGR's 'The Big Show,' in this week's edition of Sunday Sit-down.

The pair touched on everything from Mizzou men's and women's basketball, as well as the start of the Tiger baseball season.

The MU men's basketball team has still yet to win an SEC game in the 2023-24 campaign, as head coach Dennis Gates and company are riding a 12-game losing streak. Humphrey said that the rough stretch the Tigers are seeing is due to a combination of a lot of things. You can't just put your finger on one downfall this season.

The goal now is to get a conference win under your belt, if not for your team morale, then for the morale of the fanbase.

"At the very least, you want to try and give the fans that, right? It's not a lot to ask for and, obviously, you haven't been able to deliver a whole lot of results on top of that. At this point, you try and get your one and hopefully you don't end the season with a zero in the win column in conference play," Humphrey said. "There's give and take in so many different areas to where they can't get out of their own way and they find new ways to lose. I think, in the end, it's just a huge sequence of just give and take, where they can't seem to find the right combination to finally get past one of these teams. You know, it's not what any of us expected but here we are."

Jones and Humphrey also touched on the play from the women's basketball team. Head coach Robin Pingeton and company 11-14 overall, so far, with a 2-10 mark in conference play. With Sunday's loss at Arkansas, the team is now on a seven-game losing streak in what feels like an important season for Coach Pingeton.

"I think this team has a good young core that can maybe step up and find ways to build upon what they've improved on this year. Players like Abby Schreacke and Ashton Judd certainly have been playing well and Grace Slaughter, she's been great as a freshman this year. So I mean, there are pieces that you can work with for the future. This season, for whatever reason, it didn't all fall into place for the Tigers," Humphrey said.

Meanwhile, the Mizzou baseball team kicked off year one under head coach Kerrick Jackson. The Tigers went 2-1 on opening weekend against Cal Poly. Humphrey hit on the experience and tradition that Jackson will bring back to the program in 2024, after he worked at MU earlier on, as an assistant.
