Governor Parson ceremoniously signs amended NIL bill at Faurot Field

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Gov. Mike Parson and Mizzou coaches, athletes and supporters gathered at Faurot Field on Tuesday afternoon for a ceremonial signing of Missouri's amended name, image and likeness (NIL) bill.

In addition to Parson's signature, Mizzou men's basketball player Sean East got to add his name on the bill, as representative of all of MU's student-athletes.

Athletes were already allowed to receive compensation for their name, image and likeness in Missouri, before Tuesday's signing, as Missouri was the 27th state to sign it into law in 2021. However, in May of 2023, the House passed House Bill 417, which included an amendment to the original NIL bill. The change allowed for college coaches, athletic department employees and even university administrators to help student-athletes find and facilitate NIL deals through third party companies, or NIL collectives.

Mizzou's preferred NIL collective is 'Every True Tiger,' which is run by MU hoops alum Laurence Bowers, MU football alum Bud Sasser and CEO Nick Garner.

The amended bill does still include some restrictions. Coaches and any school employee are still not allowed to get paid by an athlete for helping set up NIL deals. Furthermore, coaches and employees are also prohibited from influencing a student-athlete on who or what company should represent them for NIL opportunities. Deals can also not have an impact on an athlete's opportunities with the team.

House Bill 417 was originally signed into law on July 6, 2023.
