Bills, Chiefs AFC Championship game would be played in Atlanta
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
If the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs both make it to the AFC Championship game on Jan. 29, the two teams will duke it out for the title at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
NFL owners approved the resolution for the championship game on Thursday morning.
The neutral site resolution is due to the no-contest game between the Bengals and the Bills on Jan. 2, after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the field. Hamlin was in critical condition at a Cincinnati hospital, before he was transferred home days later. Then, on Wednesday, he was discharged from a Buffalo hospital. He is going to continue his rehab at home and with his team.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he is grateful to the Atlanta Falcons for opening up their home to the Chiefs and Bills, if necessary.
"We thank both of those clubs for their assistance in the planning process. We know, if necessary, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will provide a world class atmosphere for the competing teams, our fans and partners," he said.
Any Kansas City or Buffalo season ticket holders who had previously committed to buying championship game tickets will have first priority for buying tickets in Atlanta.
The Bills will host Miami on Sunday for Super Wild Card weekend. Meanwhile, the Chiefs clinched the No. 1 seed, so that comes with a bye week for week 18.
