Last season, the Spartans finished with a 5-5 record. Dubinski says in order to get over that .500 hump, his team needs to take the season one play at a time.
"Football is nothing more than just a collection of individual plays," Dubinksi said. "I think being result obsessed as far as big picture results, score of the game and season expectations, things like that can be a distraction. If you're worried about winning every play, at the end of the season you're going to be exactly where you want to be."
You can watch the full conversation with Dubinksi in the video player below.
Dubinksi, the former Mizzou football player, added that throughout his second summer with Battle, he has been working hard to set a culture.
"We've been doing a great job setting the culture with a core group of individuals since November and really spring, summer and early in fall it was just about expanding it. How far and how deep can we get the culture within our roster," Dubinski said.
Prior to week one, Dubinksi got to see his guys in action in the Columbia Public Schools Jamboree against Rock Bridge and Hickman.
"Really, I loved what we did," Dubinski said. "We limited reps at the ones. You want to go out there and give the defense a series to play well and give the offense a series to play well against both opponents. There were little things to nitpick, we can make some better decisions at times, but other than that it was a great day for us."
Battle's opponent, Park Hill, went 5-6 last season losing in the second round of the playoffs to Park Hill South.
Dubinski says Park Hill's coach Andy Sims has similar goals to him as they both are entering their second seasons with these programs.
"Andy Sims did well in the state of Kansas and coached college football for a little while at Central Missouri," Dubinski said. "He's in year two just like myself. He teaches a lot of the same things from what I've read about him and heard him say so I expect a physical and well-coached opponent this Friday."
Park Hill and Battle will kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Battle High School.
