Special Olympics Missouri State Summer games return to Columbia May 20-22

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The 2022 Special Olympics Missouri State Summer games will be held in Columbia, once again, on Friday. The games will be hosted at both the University of Missouri and Rock Bridge High School May 20-22.

It is the first time since 2018 that the event will run over the course of three days. In 2021, Special Olympics Missouri hosted the games at Hickman High School, but it only took place on one day.

The State Summer Games will begin on Friday night at 7 p.m. with opening ceremonies of Mizzou's Carnahan Quad.

The 2022 edition of the games will feature volleyball, track and field, aquatics, and powerlifting. In addition to the competition, there will also be wellness clinics available.

Special Olympics Missouri told ABC17 Sports that the games still need volunteers in three areas. You can find that list below. You can find a link to sign up here.

  • Healthy Athletes event from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday at the Mizzou Rec. Special Olympics Missouri is looking for physical therapists, dentists/dental hygienists, nurses and general medical staff. College students can volunteer as well, as Special Olympics Missouri can train on the day of the event.
  • Track & Field on Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m. at Rock Bridge
  • Track & Field on Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to noon at Rock Bridge.
