Boonville leans on returning starters heading into week one

BOONVILLE, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boonville football team will lean on its veteran starters as the group will kick off the 2021 season on August 27 against the Pleasant Hill Roosters.

Boonville is coming off of a 6-4 campaign in the 2020 season, under the leadership of head coach Greg Hough. The Pirates did return the majority of that 2020 group.

"We've had good practices, we've had a great summer," Hough said. "As we get into camp and get ready for jamboree, into the first week, we're having fun. That's the biggest thing is that we're having fun and getting better each day."

The majority of Boonville's returners come in skilled position groups, including quarterback Colby Caton, defensive end D.J. Wesolak, wide receiver Jamiesian McKee, and others.

"A lot of us have been playing together since we were younger, so we already have that teamwork and communication," McKee said. "It makes it easier on the field."

But, Hough added that the Pirate's only have one returning starter on their offensive line in senior Peyton Hahn. He added that he still feels confident in the guys he does have.

"Luckily for us, we got some good, quality guys that we're going to put into those positions," he said. "They've done a really good job through camp and I hope they continue to improve each day and each game as the year goes on."
