Mid-American becomes the first FBS conference to cancel the fall football season

CLEVELAND, Oh (KMIZ)

The Mid-American Conference canceled its 2020 football season on Saturday morning due to concerns surrounding COVID-19.

The conference is looking into making up fall sports in the 2021 spring season.

The decision includes football, cross country, field hockey, soccer, and volleyball.

Conference officials said the decision came after medical experts informed them that running the fall season safely was nearly impossible.

The MAC was the last of the "Group of Five" conferences to come out with a definite plan. Conference USA, the Sunbelt, Mountain West and American Athletic have all announced schedules and are expected to play this fall.

Several FCS conferences have canceled the fall football season, however, the MAC is the first in the FBS to do so.
