COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A campaign committee has been filed for Columbia attorney Jeffrey Basinger the District 50 state House race, according to paperwork filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission on Thursday.

Basinger’s committee shows he is running as a Democrat. Rep. Douglas Mann (D-Columbia) announced in October that he would not seek reelection, citing mental health concerns. Mann’s term is up in 2025 and the primary will be held Aug. 6.

Mann still has an active campaign committee. Mann won the 2022 race over Republican James Musgraves by a large margin after districts were redrawn based on the 2020 census. District 50 includes the southern and eastern portions of Columbia.

Gregg Bush announced his intent to run for the House seat as a Democrat in December.

“Democrats cannot risk losing the 50th to political extremists. Voters want good public schools, common sense gun laws and reproductive rights. Our legislators focus on political theater, divisiveness and canceling rights,” Basinger said in an email to ABC 17 News.

In a statement sent to ABC 17 News, Basinger said he supports abortion rights, gun laws, higher pay for teachers, protections for voting rights and more funding for education. He made several references in his statement that shows he opposes a number of decisions made by Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, Attorney General Andrew Bailey and Sen. Eric Schmitt.

According to Basinger’s biography on the website of Cline, Braddock and Basinger, and his statement he graduated from the University of Missouri in 2002 before going to UMKC for law school, and he is a member of the Missouri and Kansas bars.

The bio online states he has practiced law in the Missouri Western District Court of Appeals, the Missouri Eastern District Court of Appeals and the U.S. Eastern District Court of Missouri. It also states he has served on the Board of Directors for Mid-Missouri Legal Services and the Boone County Bar Executive Committee.
