Abortion rights advocates campaign against Amendment 3

KMIZ

ST. LOUIS (KMIZ)

Missouri voters are set to vote on Amendment 3 on Tuesday, which, if approved, would repeal the constitutional 'right to reproductive freedom' that was put into place in 2024, and ban gender transition procedures for minors.

The state's abortion ban was overturned by voters in 2024 with the passage of the then-named Amendment 3.

Under the proposed amendment, abortion would be allowed only in cases of medical emergency or fetal anomaly. Abortions would also be allowed in cases of rape or incest up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The amendment would also require written consent from a minor and a parent or legal guardian before an abortion, except in the case of a medical emergency when consent cannot be obtained.

For minors, the amendment would prohibit gender-transition surgeries and use of hormones or puberty-blocking drugs for the purpose of gender transitions.

Groups like Stop The Ban are campaigning for a "no" vote on Amendment 3.

According to the Stop The Ban website, a "no" vote will "keep personal medical decisions between women, families, and doctors - like Missourians voted to do just 2 years ago... [and] stops politicians from overturning the will of the people, taking control away from families, and once again banning abortion."

Stop the Ban will be hosting a watch party which will feature " speakers from the coalition of organizations that formed" the organization.

Groups like the League of Women Voters in St. Louis have announced their public endorsement of Stop the Ban, showing their support for keeping the same reproductive rights in place that were established in 2024.

The Stop the Ban coalition is made up of several partners helping with campaigning:

  • Abortion Action Missouri, the ACLU of Missouri, Action St. Louis Power Project, and Beacon Reproductive Health Network, Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, Planned Parenthood Great Rivers Action, PROMO, and The Fairness Project
