Missouri highway patrol investigating political hoax text

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has opened an investigation looking into a recent fake text that said a Mid-Missouri state senator was stepping away from politics.

Republican state Sen. Caleb Rowden and his Democratic opponent for the 19th district tweeted this weekend about the hoax. Both called for an investigation.

Captain John Hotz with the highway patrol's division of drug and crime control said his investigators are looking into the matter.

Hotz was not able to provide any additional details about the investigation.

The message was sent out to some voters Saturday night and claimed Rowden was dropping out of politics because of "family matters."
