Columbia City Council to discuss parking for new downtown hotel

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia City Council members are set to discuss parking for a new hotel on the corner of Cherry and Hitt Streets downtown Tuesday night.

The parking agreement being introduced would let the hotel use 99 parking spaces in the Hitt Street Parking garage to support the anticipated off-street parking demands generated by the construction of the hotel.

Thirty-one of the parking spaces would be located on Level C of the parking garage and marked “Hotel Only Spaces” and the remaining 68 parking spaces would be unreserved, “nondesignated” spaces within the garage.

The agreement also said that the hotel will have first priority to vacant spaces within the garage and will be obligated to pay for up to 68 non-designated spaces as they become available at the current monthly rate.

However, if 68 spaces are not available by the opening date of the hotel, the agreement said the city will have to take necessary action to provide 68 non-designated spaces. The 31 "Hotel Only Spaces" would be made available when the hotel opens.

The agreement said designating these spaces for the hotel may create a future parking space shortage and potentially trigger a need for additional parking structure construction.

According to the meeting agenda, Columbia City Council members are also set to discuss taxiway improvements for the Columbia Regional Airport. The improvements would provide services related to the design of the remaining 960’ x 50’ of Taxiway A between Taxiway A4 and the holdshort line for Runway 13-31.

The project would cost $198,605.24, but the Federal Aviation Administration included it in the FY 2021 Airport Improvement Program for 90% funding, or $178,744.72.

Now, the airport is asking the council to approve funding for the rest of the costs.

The council meeting starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
