Secretary of state says Department of Justice asked to observe Cole County polls

COLE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri Secretary of State's Office said Sunday that Cole County's top elections official has denied a Department of Justice request to monitor Tuesday's election.

Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft's office shared on Twitter an email between Cole County Clerk Steve Korsmeyer and Charles Thomas with the U.S. Department of Justice. In the email, Thomas was requesting to have four staff members from the DOJ observe Cole County polling locations on Election Day.

In the email, Thomas said he's working with the Disability Rights Section of the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ to review Cole County's voting practices. He also asked to come by Korsmeyer's office on Monday, the day before the election.

According to Ashcroft's tweets, Korsmeyer denied the request. Ashcroft said "it would be highly inappropriate for federal agents to violate the law by intimidating Missouri voters at the polls on Election Day."

Korsmeyer and the Missouri Secretary of State's Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
