Weather Alert Day: Potential severe storms Saturday afternoon and evening
The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day for Saturday due to the potential for severe storms in the afternoon.
SETUP
This week's heat dome has begun to recede, leaving a stationary front overhead and hot temperatures across the Mid-South.
This front, along with moisture and wind shear supplied by a low level jet, will work to produce severe storms Saturday afternoon.
TRACK
Early Saturday morning, much of Mid-Missouri wakes up dry with some areas seeing some light scattered showers. By early afternoon, increasing temperatures will trigger thunderstorm development, with several severe storms likely across our area.
The severe window lasts into tonight, with another round of storms possible close to sundown through midnight. Severe storms drop off by early Sunday, with isolated rain possible tomorrow.
RISKS
The majority of Mid-Missouri will see a 2/5 risk for possible scattered severe storm coverage. Winds up to 70 mph, hail up to 1" in diameter, and brief strong downpours will be the main impact from Saturday afternoon into Saturday night.
Showers and storm chances continue throughout the next week allowing for increased rainfall totals with the pairing of Saturday's storms. Rainfall up to 2.5" remains possible aiding in current extreme drought relief seen across much of the region.
