Shooting in north Columbia leaves one injured, no suspect in custody
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A man was taken to the hospital after shots were fired in north Columbia just after 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Columbia Police Department.
A release posted on social media from the department states officers were called to the 2400 block of Nelwood Dr. at 11:37 p.m. for reports of shots being fired. Officers found a man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and provided aid at the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
ABC 17 News obtained door-camera video from a nearby neighbor, who wishes to remain anonymous for safety reasons. In the video, a man can be heard screaming, "I'm shot!" Another person is asking where the man was shot, and the victim replies with "In my leg!" The video ends after that.
No suspect is in custody, according to Columbia Police. Officers are currently looking for a dark-colored sedan.
An ABC 17 News videographer on scene saw a portion of Nelwood Dr. taped off with police tape. Multiple officers with the Columbia Police Department were in the area investigating.
Lt. Anthony Bowne with the Columbia Police Department told ABC 17 News on the scene that the department is still working to collect information about the shooting. Bowne also said they are actively looking for the suspect.
The release asks people to avoid the area and to contact the department with any information related to this.
A Boone County Joint Communications alert sent out at 11:50 p.m. states, "BCJC Urgent: Nelwood Dr. closed between Paris Rd and Vandiver Rd for Police Incident. Choose alternate route."
Just after 3:40 a.m., CPD and BCJC announced that the scene at the 2400 block of Nelwood Dr. is clear and the road has reopened.
The neighbor said she woke up to gunshots around midnight and didn't get up until police arrived on the scene.
She said the area is usually quiet, even though there were a few people in the neighborhood who committed crimes, but nothing violent like what happened late Thursday night.
An ABC 17 News reporter tried door-knocking Friday morning, but neighbors in the area either weren't home or didn't want to comment.
