Box truck catches fire at Memorial Stadium

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A box truck at the construction site of Memorial Stadium caught fire early Wednesday morning.

Columbia Fire Department Assistant Fire Marshal Jason Thomas told ABC 17 News at the scene that fire crews were called to Providence Road just before 1:45 a.m. Wednesday for reports of a fire. Crews arrived about five minutes later.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation, according to Thomas.

According to University of Missouri spokesman Christopher Ave, there is no indication that the fire was set intentionally. Ave added that construction crews were not on site when the fire started.

ABC 17 News saw four Columbia Fire Department firetrucks and multiple fire personnel working the scene. A portion of Providence Road near Memorial Stadium was blocked.

A Boone County Joint Communications alert sent just after 2 a.m. states, "Providence north of Mick Deaver shut down due to structure fire. Choose alternate route." Thomas said he is not sure how long the road will be closed, but the department is setting up cones to help with traffic flow in the area.

The box truck was in the construction zone at the north endzone of the stadium. It is unclear what was in the box truck when it caught fire.
