Missouri takes part in Stand Up for Science rallies with State Capitol demonstration
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Scientists, students, advocates and community members carried signs outside the Missouri Capitol on Friday during the Stand Up for Science rally.
According to the rally's website, the nationwide events were planned to advocate for continued government support for science, defend against censorship and push back on attacks against diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in research and education.
The event featured speakers in fields including cancer research, microbiology, social work, cognitive science and psychology.
"All we're trying to do is study these different things and obtain information so that we can improve human health, and that affects everybody no matter who you are," rally participant Jiana Cox told ABC 17 News.Â
This comes as a U.S. judge halted President Donald Trump’s plan to impose deep cuts to National Institutes of Health federal research grants, a move universities and Democratic-led states argued would trigger layoffs and lab closures and hinder scientific and medical advancements.
