Preparing your vehicle ahead of snow expected across Mid-Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

As snow is expected across Mid-Missouri on Wednesday, the National Weather Service has a few recommendations for preparing your vehicle for winter weather.

According to the National Weather Service, you can prepare for extreme winter weather by making a winter car survival kit. You will need jumper cables, flashlights, a first aid kit, blankets, non-perishable food, water and cat litter or sand to help with tire traction if you get stuck.

If you are stopped or stalled, stay focused on yourself, your passengers, your car and your surroundings according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Make sure your car can be seen. You can put bright markers on the antenna or windows and keep the interior dome light on. The NHTSA says to be mindful of carbon monoxide poisoning by making sure the exhaust pipe is clear of any snow and run your car only sporadically, just long enough to stay warm.

Don't run your car for long periods of time with the windows up or in an enclosed space.
