Columbia Board of Education to discuss effectiveness of AMI days Thursday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Columbia Board of Education will be holding a meeting Thursday morning to discuss the effectiveness of Alternate Methods of Instruction.
The board will be going over the feedback collected from students, staff and families after multiple AMI days due to extreme winter weather. The feedback was gathered through surveys and community outreach asking about the strengths, challenges and potential areas of improvement for AMI days.
There will also be a presentation that will highlight the effectiveness of AMI strategies that will include digital choice boards and accommodations for students with special needs or limited technology access.
Missouri law requires public school districts and charter schools to provide a minimum of 1,044 instructional hours to receive funding.
The 1,044 hours of instruction equates to roughly 166 days of school per year. According to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, schools must factor a “minimum of 36 make-up hours”, or five days. These days can be added to the end of the academic year to meet state requirements.
The board will also reveal the two finalist for the name of the new elementary school being built in southwest Columbia.
Thursday's meeting will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Aslin Administration building on Worley Street.
