The Hallsville Board of Education is set to discuss school safety in the wake of a school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin that killed a student and teacher and injured several others.

According to the meeting agenda the School Superintendents Association held a webinar for school and district leaders about how to gauge the legitimacy of anonymous threats. District takeaways from the meeting were that every threat should be taken seriously and reported to police, however, the police and school response can vary based on the severity of the threat and the likelihood it may be real.

The School Superintendents Association also said that there is often a spike in anonymous threats toward schools following other high-profile mass shootings at schools, at times when there may be heightened fear and anxiety, documents indicate.

Hallsville was one of several Mid-Missouri school districts impacted by a surge in threats in September. This included a high school student in Hallsville being detained after making a threatening statement on Sept. 26.

The board is also set to discuss “Personnel Matters” during a closed session near the end of the meeting, the agenda states.
