The southern Appalachians are still trying to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
The storm last week dumped up to 30 inches of rain in some areas of western North Carolina, leading to catastrophic flooding and 100-plus deaths and counting.
Task Force 1 members from Columbia are in North Carolina helping look for human remains in remote, mountainous terrain. Despite the warning, there was little that many people living in the area could do to escape the storm.
