9/11 tribute events to be held in Mid-Missouri Wednesday

The Mid-Missouri Patriot Day Ceremony will be taking place Wednesday morning in tribute to the 23 year anniversary of 9/11.

The Mid-Missouri Patriot Day Ceremony will be held at the Boone County War Memorial Plaza in Downtown Columbia at 7:30 a.m. and will the first of many tribute ceremonies across Mid-Missouri.

There will be a Patriot Day/Employer support luncheon at the Jefferson City Air Port at 11 a.m. in Hanger 500. The University of Missouri will have a wreath laying ceremony from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Traditions Plaza.

The Mid-Missouri Patriot Day Ceremony taking place at 7:30 a.m. is hosted by the United States Exercise Tiger Foundation and will be assisted by University of Missouri fraternity, Sigma Nu.

Fraternity members will be placing 200 flags on the Boone County Courthouse grass in the shape of a pentagon and will represent the 184 killed in the attack on the Pentagon. Another 12 flags will be placed to honor the number of Missourians who died that day and a lone flag for a Mizzou grad who died as well.

There will be several key speakers such as State Rep Kathy Steinhoff, Mayor Buffaloe, Boone County Commissioners Justin Aldred, Kip Kendrick and Janet Thompson. The Missouri State Fire Marshall, Tim Bean will be among fire chiefs who will speak as will Boone Fire’s Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp. Sima Nu’s Mason Babington will also say a few words on what the day means to his fraternity.

The public and veterans who served in Afghanistan are asked to attend today's ceremony and flowers will be provided to lay at the base of the memorial walls. Special medals will be given to an veteran who attend the ceremony.
