Three men set to have hearings for separate cases at Boone County Courthouse

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Three men are set to have hearings on three different cases at the Boone County Courthouse Friday, with each of them being charged with first-degree murder.

The first to appear is Jessie Williams, 32, who is being charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly pushed Kaylen Schmit off a bridge on Highway 63 back in Oct. 2022. Schmit fell 38 feet into a wooded area and died later in the hospital.

Witness told police that they had seen Williams and Schmit near a homeless camp arguing over Schmit's belongings before the incident.

Williams' hearing was set to begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Boone County Courthouse.

The second man set for a hearing Friday is Sevance Brewer, 31. He was charged back in Aug. 2023 with four felonies including first and second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a firearm.

The Boone County Sheriff's office responded to the 4800 block of Clearview Rd. around 7:30 a.m. Aug. 1 where they found a pregnant woman dead with a gunshot wound. Brewer had told investigators he shot the victim during an argument and watched her fall before leaving the home with a gun.

Brewer's hearing began at 8:55 a.m. at the Boone County Courthouse.

The third man set to appear is Sergio Sayles, 36, who has pled not guilty to the death of the mother of his child, Jasmine King. He is being charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, stalking and more.

Police found King dead from stab wounds to her head, face, neck, torso and back in her home in 2023 in the 300 block of Ashley St. after her family called for a wellness check.

Court documents say witness statements and surveillance video was able to connect Sayles with the murder. Back in April, Cole County's top prosecutor did file to seek the death penalty.

Since the case has heading to court, two judges have recused themselves from the case.

He will now face Judge Jacobs in-person at the Boone County Courthouse at 1:30 p.m.
