Experts recommend not warming up cars for too long before driving
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
With the brutal cold hitting here in Mid-Missouri and across the country, it's tempting to want to run your car to get the engine and interior warm before driving. However, experts say that can negatively impact your car and your wallet.
AAA says it should only take from the time you get in the car, start it and buckle up, you are then good to drive.
That will allow lubricant to get into all of the engine's vital parts to ensure smooth operations. They also say to drive your car normally and avoid fast acceleration at first drive.
According to the chief mechanic for Consumer Reports, when temperatures drop, they recommend having your car running for about one minute before driving.
Most modern cars can have the engine fully lubricated within 20 to 30 seconds.
Running your car for longer than that wastes fuel, creates unnecessary emissions, and can cause wear to your car.
The car engine and cabin will warm faster when you drive, rather than letting it sit running to warm up.
However, experts say it is okay to let your car warm for a little longer if you need to clear snow or ice off it.
In addition to the recommendations above, staying on top of routine maintenance can make modern car engines last for up to 200,000 miles.
