Man charged for Saturday night shooting in Columbia park

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) -

Prosecutors charged a man on Monday for allegedly shooting another person at a Columbia park over the weekend.

The Boone County Prosecutor's Office charged Terron D. Shelton Jr. with assault and armed criminal action. Columbia police believe he shot a man at Cosmo Park on Saturday night during a large gathering.

Police found the victim of the shooting at the Super 7 motel on Rangeline Street. Officers say the man had a bullet wound to his arm and the car he was in had several bullet holes in it. Police said they found several 7.62x39mm bullet cartridges around the soccer fields at Cosmo Park.

The victim allegedly told police he knew Shelton as a "fellow Lincoln University student," according to the probable cause statement. He knew Shelton from earlier "altercations."

A Lincoln spokesperson confirmed Shelton is a student.

Police said the victim told them he was getting into his car to avoid a fight with Shelton. He accused Shelton of firing a gun at him, hitting him in the arm and also striking his car.

At least two other witnesses spoke with officers about the shooting, with one of them identifying Shelton as the person who pulled the trigger.

A judge signed a no-bond warrant for Shelton's arrest on Monday. He had not been booked into the Boone County Jail as of Tuesday morning.
