I-70 is set to be closed for part of Sunday as part of the Rocheport bridge set for demolition
BOONE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing Interstate 70 near the Missouri River due to the blasting of the Rocheport Bridge on Sunday
The blast is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. that day. MODOT is strongly advising drivers to avoid the interstate between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. that day to ensure the safety of motorists and the demolition team.
I-70 traffic will be stopped in both directions right before to the blast and during the clean-up period.
Crews will clear and inspect the westbound bridge of all debris before the roads reopen after the blast occurs. It is expected to take up to an hour.
Falling in the perimeter of the explosion, a portion of Katy Trail will also be closed and secured during and after the blast.
The blast will drop 6 million pounds of steel and 1,100 feet of truss into the Missouri River. The demolition team has 24 hours to clear the waterway of all debris in order to reopen the river channel.
MODOT plans to livestream the event on their website.
According to MODOT's website, the Rocheport Bridge is used by 34,000 vehicles and 8,227 commercial vehicles a day.
