Certain meat item prices higher in Midwest this Labor Day Weekend
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
As consumers continue to celebrate Labor Day Weekend, prices on certain food items have increased in the past month in the midwest compared to other U.S. cities and grill safety is on top of mind.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index nationwide has increase by .2% during the month of July. This follows after the previous month increased by .1%.
The Consumer Price Index measures the change in prices paid by purchasers for goods and services.
Without seasonal adjustments, the price index rose 3.2% over the last 12 months.
Currently, there is no food index data for the month of August.
Nationally, prices of bread, flour, cheddar cheese, certain fruits, ice cream and more have seen an increase.
Items that shoppers in the Midwest may see a slight price increase to this holiday weekend include beef, steak, bacon and other pork products.
While meat prices are on the rise here, that isn't stopping folks from lighting up the barbeque.
The National Fire Protection Association provided tips on their website for safe grilling which include; keeping pets and children away from the grill and removing all grease and fat buildup before cooking
The association also says to check the gas tank hose before using and to never leave a hot grill unattended. Also, always have a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.
If you start to smell gas, back away from the grill and call the fire department immediately.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated 13 deaths occur each year from improper grill usage. They also report that there were 5,400 grill related injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2022.
