Change of judge granted in Missouri Military Academy lawsuit involving former student

A motion for a change of judge was granted Wednesday in a lawsuit where a former student who attempted suicide is suing Missouri Military Academy.
The motion was filed by the former student’s attorney on Monday.
A former Missouri Military Academy student filed a personal injury lawsuit against the school on Nov. 28 after he claimed the school didn't do enough to stop routine attacks by others at the school. The lawsuit refers to beatings, attacks and group fights that took place over three school years between 2018-21.
The former student is a minor. The academy is a boarding school for high school and middle school boys.
The lawsuit stated that on Jan. 29, 2021, due to the continuous abuse, the student attempted suicide so he didn't have to return to the school. The student was hospitalized as a result of the attempt. He allegedly told hospital staff that he would rather die than return to school.
The former student claims the school knew about the attacks but failed to act.
"The allegations in the lawsuit are wholly unfounded," MMA President Richard Geraci said in a Nov. 30 statement.
A motion for a change of judge was previously filed on Friday, Dec. 2. A judge as assigned on Dec. 5, according to Casenet. The school was issued a summons on Dec. 5.
