Special prosecutor reviewing deadly November Columbia police shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A special prosecutor will decide whether or not a Columbia police officer that shot and killed a man last year will face charges.

St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar's office will review the police shooting of 30-year-old Quillan Jacobs. Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight appointed Lohmar to review the case on Feb. 28, according to Knight's office. The prosecutor will review the Missouri State Highway Patrol's investigation into the shooting.

An officer killed Jacobs as he ran down an alleyway downtown on Nov. 14, 2021. Police said Jacobs and Todd Nesbitt Jr. had just shot at each other outside Vibez Lounge around 3 a.m. when Jacobs ran from the scene. The department said Jacobs was shooting back into a crowd outside the business while he ran away. Four other people were shot at the scene that morning.

Jacobs' sister, Candice Gay, told ABC 17 News in November that she could not understand the department's version of events. She said she did not know Jacobs even had a gun.

A special prosecutor last month cleared two Columbia police officers that shot and killed James Sears III in May 2021 outside a Petro-Mart gas station on Ash Street and Stadium Boulevard.

Nesbitt faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He is scheduled for trial on March 16.
