Man charged with weekend Sedalia shooting

SEDALIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Pettis County prosecutors charged a man on Sunday with a Sedalia shooting that injured one man.

Michael Carpenter faces several felony charges including first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

Court documents say Sedalia police officers responded to the intersection of South Engineer Avenue and East 13th Street for a reported shooting just before 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 22. Police say dispatchers also received a call from Carpenter who admitted to shooting the man.

Carpenter allegedly told officers he was at his uncle Jerry Iman's house when he shot Jimmy Bowers. Documents show Carpenter admitted to shooting Bowers in the chest after he was apparently banging on the door with a hammer. Carpenter's probable cause said there was no obvious damage to the door.

Police spoke with Bowers who said he knocked on the door to see Carpenter's uncle and then he had been shot. Jerry allegedly told officers he was sleeping at the time but was awoken by the gunshot. The PC said Jerry told Carpenter to call 911.

Police say Carpenter also admitted to using methamphetamine before the shooting.

Bowers was taken to the hospital. Authorities said he was in stable condition and was taken to the operating room.
