Scrap yard fire under control after burning for more than five hours

JONESBURG, Mo. (KMIZ)

Twenty fire departments worked Friday morning to put a fire out after a multi-alarm was called out for a fire at a scrap yard near Jonesburg.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, several drivers reported the fire at 5:43 a.m. at Interstate Metal Process east of Jonesburg.

A code red alert was issued at 8:50 a.m. by the Warren County Emergency Management Agency after the smoke spread southeast across the county. This was lifted for residents in the area at 11 a.m. however two properties adjacent to the scrap yard were told to stay sheltered.

It is unclear if an alert was issued for residents in Montgomery County.

As of 11:06 a.m., the fire was 95% contained.

Smoke was reported to be seen along I-70 near mile marker 185 near the Montgomery/Warren County border.

Crews were on scene for at least five hours working to control the fire. Materials that were burned include fabrics, plastics, wood and silk mar. The smoke was described as a low-level hazard.

The fire and smoke do not appear to have impacted traffic.
