City of California hires new police chief

CALIFORNIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Moniteau County city has hired a new police chief.

California City Clerk Scott Jobe told ABC 17 News in an email on Thursday that Scott John will be the city’s new chief of police and Dale Harp will be a detective and sergeant.  Both started on Monday. The city still have two potential officers in a police academy, and it is still looking to hire more officers, Jobe wrote.

The city has been left without a chief of police since former Chief Daniel Hurt resigned from his position on Aug. 23. Several police officers also left following Hurt’s resignation.

The Moniteau County Sheriff’s Office entered an agreement with City of California last month and had been assisting the city since August. Jobe told ABC 17 News that the sheriff’s office is still responding to calls within city limits.
