Boil order issued after positive E. coli test for city of California

KMIZ

CALIFORNIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A boil order was issued by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for the California public water system after a positive total coliform and E. coli test on June 29.

Another sample was tested on June 30 and the bacteria was detected again.

A positive E. coli test indicates the water may be contaminated with human or animal waste that can cause health problems for residents.

The boil order will remain in effect until the contaminant is no longer present.

Residents are urged to take the following precautions:

  • Boil water for three minutes prior to using it for cooking or drinking.
  • Do not consume ice from an automatic ice maker. Remake ice with water that has been boiled for three minutes.
  • Wash dishes and food contact surfaces by immersing for one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented bleach per gallon of water.
