Missouri prisons suspend visits to limit spread of COVID-19

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri Department of Corrections announced on Thursday it's suspending prison visits for 30 days.

The state department said no cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at state prisons. It included the move will protect prison inmates, staff and visitors.

"While we recognize that visiting is an essential part of rehabilitation, the department must protect the health and wellness of all who live in, work in, and visit state prisons."

According to the announcement, attorneys will be allowed to meet with inmates. Those visits will be scheduled through the warden's office.

The letter shows the department of corrections is following guidance on coronavirus from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

State officials announced last night a second positive case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in Missouri. Gov. Parson said the person in their twenties had recently traveled to Austria.

The positive cases have been reported in Greene County and St. Louis County.

The Senate announced Wednesday it won't be in session until March 29 to limit the spread of COVID-19. State representatives are expected to continue working next week. The house meeting calendar shows many hearings next week have been canceled.
