Police: Someone started deadly Mexico apartment fire

MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

One or more people were responsible for starting a fire that killed a 60-year-old woman a few days before Christmas.

The fire was one of two that broke out in the 1200 block of West Breckenridge and the 1000 block of Elmwood Drive about an hour apart in the early hours of Dec. 23. The Mexico Department of Public Safety said in a news release that both were started by a person or people.

Department Major Brice Mesko said police are not saying at this time whether they suspect the fire was started intentionally.

Ruth Ann Stuart died in the fire in an apartment complex on Breckenridge. Several units in the complex burned.

The investigation into the fires is ongoing, police say.
