A Belleville, Illinois, man was hurt after a slow-moving train hit a semi-truck tanker in Mexico over the weekend.

Officers with the Mexico Public Safety Department responded to the crash at the Jefferson Street railroad crossing on Saturday around 8:20 a.m. Police said 63-year-old Mark Taylor was trying to turn around the semi-truck and the tank it was pulling at the time of the crash. The train hit the back of the tank filled with diesel fuel after the semi-truck stopped.

Police said the train pushed the trailer for about 100 feet. Emergency crews took Taylor to University Hospital in Columbia with non-life threatening injuries. He was treated and released, MU Health Care said Monday.

Police said fewer than 5 gallons of diesel fuel and gasoline spilled out of the trailer as a result of the crash.

Railroad officials reopened the tracks at Jefferson Street and Calhoun Street around 12:40 p.m. following an inspection.

Crews transferred the fuel off the trailer and moved the semi from the scene around 5:35 p.m.
